5G and Security: What You Don't Know Will Hurt You

Clearly, 5G is emerging, and on everyone's mind. At the same time, a daily barrage of security (bad) news provides a backdrop against which every new emerging frontier must be understood, evaluated, and deployed. This talk will help most of the ONF attendees started on their 5G journey, while keeping the focus on the security of their customers, and by extension, of their own.

With any new and emerging technology, what you don't know will hurt you and your customers. 5G will provide an entirely new attack surface to bad actors. Hackers routinely look for new attack surfaces, and marry them with other known surfaces in innovative (!) ways, to create new vulnerabilities. When they become known, one can usually shut the vulnerabilities and surfaces down. Those become the known-unknowns that you watch for. It's the "unknown unknowns", however, that can hurt you and your customers in ways unimaginable, because they can remain hidden from the technology practitioners for a long duration of time.

In this presentation, we will explore a few areas of 5G technology to watch for many aspects of security. We will provide a primer on mobile infrastructure security, highlight use-cases that hackers may see as attack vehicles, understand the implications of malicious attacks (e.g. ransomware), and discuss deep attacks involving weaponization of exploits (e.g. immobilization of national critical infrastructure). For a new and exciting technology such as 5G to truly succeed, all known-unknowns should be handled head-on, and all possible unknown-unknowns should be anticipated and addressed as they arise.

Join us for an exciting presentation and discussion.
