Network slicing is one of the foundational pillars for 5G as it aims to open new business opportunities to mobile network operators on a common infrastructure. While core network slicing has been an active study item in 3GPP, slicing of the RAN have yet to be a standards component. In this talk, we will overview the architectural evolution of RAN - from disaggregation to software-defined control and present dynamic and elastic slicing of the RAN as an important next step in this evolution. We will discuss potential benefits, as well as architectural requirements. We will also discuss how network slicing, including that of the RAN could be automated and orchestrated.
