Openness, Programmability and Automation are key enablers for the disaggregation and SW transformation of next generation self-driving network infrastructure. Multi-layer network control will enable Service Providers to automate their services life cycles (birth, operation, modification) and to optimise their network efficiency over the full range of changing service demand. To achieve this multi-layer control the Optical Line System infrastructure must embrace both openness and disaggregation. The ONOS-ODTN ecosystem already provides both a suite of integrated architectural solutions and rich tool box of programmable features. Further steps towards self-driving architecture call for enhancements in optical control loops and data points, exposing state data through telemetry streaming. This will allow controllers to ensure effective performance in presence of dynamic events and to orchestrate resiliency in network operation in the event of unplanned route changes. This dynamic multi-layer control offers a way to avoid overprovisioning of network resources, driving up complexity and ultimately both CapEx and OpeEx costs. Based on the experience of implementing Open Line Systems and centralized control loops, a solution can be outlined allowing to operate the optical network together with the routed IP Network in a seamless and vendor-independent manner.
